THE FLOOR — At approximately 6:52 AM, residents were awakened by a crash, followed by a second crash, followed by a suspicious period of total silence. By the time first responders arrived in their pajamas, the floor was a debris field: bottles down, cords rearranged, and one water bottle a full nine feet from its last known location.
There were only two suspects in the house. Both were asleep. Both were extremely asleep. Witnesses describe the sleeping as "aggressive" and "way too convincing," with one suspect, Atticus, snoring at a volume experts say cannot be achieved without practice.
THE EVIDENCE. A forensic review of the scene revealed that every downed bottle had rolled in a pattern consistent with being "batted, repeatedly, with joy." Investigators also recovered one black hair from the desk above the debris. Atticus is black. Atticus maintains that "lots of things are black."
THE ATTICUS THEORY. The prevailing theory. Atticus, unemployed, has a documented history of gravity-related offenses, including two prior counts of aggravated plant assault and an open case involving a counter and some ham. He has offered three alibis: that he was asleep, that "the wind" did it, and that the household is being targeted by "a dog we don't even have." A ShatNews poll found 94% of the household considers him responsible. The remaining 6% is Atticus and the wind.
THE BEAN QUESTION. Could Bean have done it? Officially, no. Bean is a decorated hero with an approval rating of 100% and, his office notes, "extremely good posture." However, this investigative unit is obligated to report that at 6:51 AM — one minute before the crash — Bean was seen walking calmly away from the scene, which is either completely innocent or the coolest thing a guilty cat has ever done.
THE COVER-UP. By mid-morning, both suspects had launched a coordinated charm offensive: synchronized purring, strategic lap deployment, and at least one incident of Atticus bringing a toy mouse to the victim's family as what analysts call "hush merchandise."
ShatNews attempted to interview eyewitness Adelyn, who was present in the household at the time of the incident. The interview was cut short when the primary suspect climbed into her lap, activated maximum purr, and fell asleep, at which point the witness declared the case "closed" and "shhh, he's sleeping."
The bottles have been righted and moved to a high shelf, where sources confirm it is "only a matter of time."
This investigation is ongoing. If you have information, please tell literally anyone in the house.
