THE KITCHEN — Authorities responded Tuesday to reports of suspicious activity on the counter, where they discovered Atticus, 6, sitting directly next to an empty plate that had very recently contained ham. He described himself as "shocked as anyone."
This marks the third counter-surfing incident this week for Atticus, who remains unemployed and, according to court records, has described his occupation variously as "consultant," "freelancer," and "biscuit maker" — the last of which investigators determined refers to kneading a blanket. Booking documents also list his street name — "Shat" — the very name this network proudly bears, a coincidence ShatNews's legal department has repeatedly asked us to stop bringing up.
Atticus's legal troubles are extensive. His prior record includes two counts of aggravated plant assault, unlawful occupation of a fresh laundry pile, seventeen noise complaints (all filed at 3 AM), and one charge of grand theft hair-tie, for which forty-one hair ties were later recovered from beneath the couch in what officials called "a sophisticated stash operation."
He is also the sole suspect in the ongoing "Terror of Towels" case — a years-long campaign of unprovoked ambushes against the bathroom's hanging towels. Every towel in the residence now bears pull-marks. At least three have been dragged fully to the floor and, in the words of one investigator, "aggressively defeated." When photographed at the scene of the most recent attack, Atticus licked his lips and left without comment.
Representing himself, Atticus mounted a defense consisting entirely of showing his belly, a maneuver the court acknowledged was "very effective" before all charges were reduced to time served (one timeout in the bathroom, cut short when he cried).
Bean, the household's other cat and a decorated hero, declined to comment on his associate's troubles, though sources close to Bean confirm the two were seen sharing a sunbeam hours later, suggesting the bond between them remains, regrettably, unbreakable.
Atticus was released to the living room, where he immediately began plotting near the toaster.
